A shadow support (also known as a shadow teacher or learning support assistant) is an individual who provides one-on-one assistance to a child, typically in a classroom setting, to help them engage in learning and social interactions. Shadow support is often used for children with special educational needs (SEN), including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, or behavioral challenges.
How Does Shadow Support Work?
- Individualized Assistance – The shadow supports the child by adapting lessons, providing prompts, or helping them stay on task.
- Promoting Independence – Over time, the goal is to gradually reduce assistance so the child becomes more independent.
- Facilitating Social Skills – The shadow may help the child interact with peers, follow classroom rules, and participate in group activities.
- Behavioral Support – Helps the child manage emotions, follow routines, and develop self-regulation strategies.
- Collaboration with Teachers – The shadow works closely with educators and therapists to align support strategies with learning goals.
